NORTH RIDGEVILLE — A woman was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland with serious injuries after she lost control of her car last night on the Ohio Turnpike in North Ridgeville and was hit by a semi.
Marcolyn Karpan, 41, of Cleveland, was eastbound in the far left lane about 9:30 p.m. when she hydroplaned and lost control of her 1996 Chevy Lumina, according to the Milan post of the State Highway Patrol. Her car went into the center lane, and Scott Gaines, 33, of North Royalton, who was driving a 2009 Freightliner Semi, attempted to avoid her by braking and changing lanes.
His semi wound up striking Karpan’s car on the right side, and both vehicles went off the right side of the road and came to rest against a guardrail.
Gaines wasn’t hurt, but Karpan, who had to be removed from her car by first-responders, was taken by LifeCare to St. John West Shore hospital in Westlake. She was later LifeFlighted to MetroHealth with head and spinal injuries. She is in critical condition this morning, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Karpan’s car, which had heavy damage to its entire right side, top and front, was towed from the scene by Rich’s Towing. Gaines’ semi had minor damage to the right-front fender area.
Karpan was cited with operating a vehicle without reasonable control. It was unknown whether she was wearing a seat belt.
Ohio Turnpike Maintenance assisted at the scene.
