Man shot in groin in Elyria

ELYRIA – A 22-year-old Elyria man was shot in the groin early Saturday morning in a shooting on North Abbe Road.

According to Elyria police, Derek Peterson was shot about 4 a.m. in the 600 block of North Abbe Road.

Peterson was transported to EMH, then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

He underwent surgery at MetroHealth

and was listed in fair condition Saturday evening.

Doniel Mitchell, 33, of Elyria was arrested at the scene of the shooting and was charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault. He is taken to the Lorain County Jail and was released on bond.

Police did not say whether Mitchell shot Peterson or was involved in the incident in another way.

The investigation into what led up to Peterson getting shot is still under way, police said. No other arrests have yet been made.
