CLEVELAND – LeBron James has a few small matters to take care of this summer, so right now he doesn’t plan on playing for USA Basketball.
Set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, James announced Wednesday that he will likely skip the FIBA World Championships, to be held in Turkey in late August and the first two weeks of September.
James will also star in a movie, “Fantasy Basketball Camp,” to be filmed this summer, so he’s unlikely to have enough time to practice with USA Basketball prior to the World Championships.
“I’m probably not playing,” the 25-year-old said at Quicken Loans Arena prior to a game against the Milwaukee Bucks. “There’s a lot of decisions I’ve got to make this summer.”
With the Cavaliers hoping to win their first championship, James could be playing in the NBA Finals in late June. The small forward will then become an unrestricted free agent, so bypassing the World Championships – and all the practices before the competition – will give him ample time to weigh all his options.
The Cavaliers are still considered the frontrunner to retain James, but he’ll likely listen to a lot of offers before announcing his final decision.
James has been an extremely active and willing participant with USA Basketball, helping the Olympic team win a gold medal in 2008. He was also part of the bronze medal team in 2004.
“I love representing my country,” James said. “I would love to do that, but I’ve got a very, very, very busy summer.”
James’ new endorsement deal with Nike, meanwhile, is reportedly for seven years and contains no bonuses for playing in a larger market. His original $90 million deal with the shoe company was set to expire this summer.
James recently filmed a shoe commercial at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, his alma mater.
