The American Red Cross Lorain County Chapter opened two temporary shelters for families displaced by the flooding. One was at the Red Cross’ offices at 2929 West River Road North in Elyria. The other location is St. Peters Church on Center Ridge Road in North Ridgeville.
Numbers of people who were arriving at either shelter was not yet known, according to Mary Moran.
“We’ll know more when out teams come back,” she said. “Right now we’ve got seven volunteers out assessing how much disaster aid is needed. We’ll go from there.”
Refreshments will be available at both sites, and possibly meals,” Moran said.
The Red Cross was also providing clean-up kits to any one needing them to clean up flooded basements. The kits consist of a mop, broom, bucket, gloves and cleaning supplies to deal with mildew and mold, Moran said.
“So far we’ve given those out to eight families,” she said.
None of those families were believed to have been forced form their homes by flooding. Moran added.
Red Cross officials had reports of serious flooding to some in the Russia Road area, but was in the process of determining other serious trouble spots around the county, Moran said.
Residents of Twin Lakes Homes mobile home park remained high and dry, thanks to the fact modular homes there are constructed up off concrete pads. But access roads leading into and through the community were impassable in spots where water was 2½ to 3 feet high, according to Elizabeth Miller, office manager for the Albrecht Road complex.
“Water never goes in our houses due to the way they’re built,” she said.
