Westbrook rusty in exhibition debut

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Jake Westbrook made his exhibition debut Monday against the Diamondbacks at Tucson’s Electric Park.

It was the first time the right-hander had faced major league hitters since May 28, 2008, and the results were predictable.

Looking rusty, Westbrook, who has been sidelined by Tommy John surgery on his right elbow for nearly two years, allowed a run on one hit, three walks and a hit batter, failing to reach his prescribed two innings, thanks to a high pitch count.

More important than the results, though, was that Westbrook emerged without incident.

“I definitely didn’t throw as well as I would have liked,” he said. “I was definitely all over the place, but I felt strong and that might have been one of the reasons for that.

“It’s just a matter of remembering how to pitch. First and foremost, I felt good, and that was encouraging.”
