Indians manager Manny Acta told reporters in Goodyear, Ariz., on Thursday that left-hander David Huff had won a spot in the rotation over right-hander Carlos Carrasco.
Acta said Huff would fill the fourth spot in the rotation, while right-hander Mitch Talbot, who had already secured a starting job, will pitch out of the fifth spot. Jake Westbrook, Fausto Carmona and Justin Masterson are the top three starters.
Huff led the Indians with 11 wins last year as a rookie, but struggled to a 5.61 ERA in 23 starts. Carrasco, part of the Cliff Lee trade with the Phillies last year, went 0-4 with an 8.87 ERA in five starts for Cleveland in 2009.
Huff entered camp in a perceived battle with Aaron Laffey and Talbot for one of two rotation openings. But Carrasco entered the picture late after it was announced that Talbot and Laffey (bullpen) had made the team.
Huff went 2-1 with a 4.18 ERA in six exhibition games (five starts), while Carrasco was 0-0 with a 4.60 ERA in four games (two starts).
