Officer Kerstetter’s name added to law enforcement memorial

ELYRIA — Slain Elyria police officer James Kerstetter’s name was added this morning to a monument at the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office honoring Lorain County law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

Chris Lewis, from Lewis Monuments in Lorain, was at the Sheriff’s Office today to do the engraving.

Kerstetter, who was killed while responding to a neighbor dispute on Elyria’s south side March 15, is the 14th name on the monument.

He is the second Elyria patrolman killed in the line of duty. Howard B. Taft died in August 1942.

The last Lorain County law enforcement officer to be killed before Kerstetter was Kenneth Tomaszeski, a Lorain County sheriff’s deputy who died July 3, 1979.
