Friday, July 30th, 2010

LORAIN — A man was treated at Community Regional Medical Center for a gunshot wound he received yesterday afternoon in South Lorain, according to a Lorain police report.

According to the report, an officer was dispatched to the hospital at about 6 p.m. Noel Cruz, 19, was bleeding from his right ankle, the report said.

Cruz told officers he and a friend were walking eastbound from Globe Avenue in the 1700 block of East 30th Street when they heard a “popping/firecracker” sound. Both males began to run and ran all the way to the friend’s house on East 30th Street.

Once they arrived, Cruz realized he had a burning sensation in his ankle and was bleeding. He and his friend tried cleaning the wound, but, upon realizing it was more serious, asked another friend to drive Cruz to the hospital.

None of the men knew where the gunshots had come from, knew of any problems or why anyone would want to shoot them, they told police.

Officers collected gunshot residue evidence from Cruz and took photographs of his wound, all of which were entered into evidence.

The bullet was lodged in Cruz’s foot, the report said. Hospital staff were told to contact police when the bullet is removed so it can be entered into evidence as well. Cruz was listed in good condition today, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Bank robbery suspect identified as Sheffield Lake man

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

A bank robbery suspect was taken into custody yesterday afternoon in Sheffield Lake, according to the FBI.

FBI spokesman Scott Wilson said a 38-year-old white male was arrested yesterday at the Erie Shores Landing apartment complex on Lake Road on an unrelated parole violation through the Ohio Adult Parole Authority. Sheriff’s Capt. John Reiber ID’d the man as Robert Starnes of Sheffield Lake.

Wilson wouldn’t say specifically if the man is a suspect in Wednesday’s robbery of the Chase bank branch in Sheffield Lake.

“We’re trying to piece this together,” Wilson said. “We believe we have the individual for at least one of three bank robberies we’re investigating.”

Those three robberies include the June 28 holdup of a Lorain National Bank branch in Sheffield Township, the July 14 holdup of an Amherst FirstMerit bank and Wednesday’s holdup in Sheffield Lake.

Wilson said he expects Starnes will be charged early next week.

Wilson said Starnes was arrested based on tips from people who saw the surveillance photos in media coverage, adding the FBI had received “quite a few tips.”

Elyria woman turns herself in for theft after photos hit media

Friday, July 16th, 2010

SHEFFIELD LAKE — Just hours after photos were released to the media yesterday, a pregnant Elyria woman turned herself into police and admitted she had stolen a purse and used the credit cards in it on a shopping spree, according to police.

Sheffield Lake police Capt. Tony Campo said the woman, who is from Elyria, is 20 years old and is overdue to give birth, came to the police station about 3:30 p.m. and told officers that she “saw her pictures in the newspapers’ ” websites.”

Campo said yesterday that a purse had been stolen Monday from a car parked at Lakewood Beach park. Credit cards from the purse were used later that night to wrack up more than $200 in purchases at Super Wal-Mart in Elyria, and the woman, along with a man and her two young children, were caught on security cameras.

Campo said that he didn’t arrest the woman when she turned herself in due to the fact that she was so close to giving birth.

He said charges will “absolutely” follow, and he expects the charges to be forgery and theft, but he added “it will be up to the grand jury.”

Campo said the woman was “very cooperative” and he expects she will continue to cooperate, adding that he knows where to find her and that she had family local.

Campo said the woman didn’t give any reason for her crimes other than saying that she had made a “dumb mistake.”

He’s just happy for the quick resolution.

“The media worked,” he said. “At this time yesterday, we didn’t have any idea who this woman was.”

Campo said the man who was with the woman in security photos didn’t have anything to do with the crime.
