Lorain County Junior Fair king and queen crowned

Monday, August 24th, 2009

WELLINGTON — More teens than any year since the 1980s competed to be crowned Lorain County Junior Fair king and queen, honors that went to Madalyn McMinn and Garrett Schwedt this afternoon during the fair’s opening ceremonies.

McMinn, 18, of Wellington, is the daughter of Jennifer and Thomas McMinn. She is a 13-year member of 4-H and a graduate of Wellington High School. She’s leaving in a couple of weeks to attend Ohio Northern University in Ada, where she’ll be in the PharmD program. She plans to get a doctorate of pharmacy and become a pharmacist.

Schwedt, 19, of Elyria, is the son of Laura Schwedt and Robert Scwedt. He is a 14-year member of 4-H and a graduate of Elyria High School. He plans to attend The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster.

Listen to WEOL’s interview with the new king and queen.

Eleven girls and six boys signed up for the chance to be fair royalty. Competitors were narrowed down to the final eight.

Meet the final eight.

McMinn said she was “surprised, shocked … and happy” to be crowned.

She said she’s excited to be in the spotlight for fair week but is especially looking forward to traveling and supporting Lorain County at fairs around the state.

“We’ll tour the different fairs and tell people about Lorain County,” Schwedt said.

But he’s most excited for this year’s fair, which will be his last as a Junior Fair board member.

He says he doubts he’ll know what to do with himself next year without the fair and weeks preparation.

Contact Rona Proudfoot at rproudfoot@chroniclet.com, (440) 371-0792 or stop by to see her at the fair. She’s based at the WEOL booth and will be wondering the fairgrounds in a bright gold Chroniclet.com T-shirt.
