Monday, December 20th, 2010Chill relief: As storm moves out, wind chills should improve
Wednesday, December 15th, 2010It’s cold. And it’s likely to stay that way another day before we get a bit of a break.
National Weather Service meteorologist Tom King said Tuesday that area temperatures were expected to average around 10 degrees overnight Tuesday, while winds also were expected to decrease to 10 mph during the overnight hours.
“The good news is that the wind gusts of 15 to 30 mph that we were experiencing will drop to around 8 to 12 mph,” King said. “That means the wind chills won’t be so bad. The winds have calmed down a bit.”

The outlook for today calls for the frigid readings of the past few days to moderate a bit, with highs edging into the lower 20s.
“We’re not going to see a lot of warm-up,” King said.
Overnight lows tonight could dip to around 14, he said.
“For Thursday, the upper 20s is as good as you’re going to get. In fact, looking ahead through next Tuesday, the highest temperatures we’re seeing right now is in the upper 20s,” he said.
Lows are expected to range from 15 to 20 during the same period.
The bone-chilling lows and even-colder wind chill readings of the past few days are nothing out of the ordinary for this time of year.
“It’s perfectly acceptable for wind chills to be around zero,” King said.
Chances of snow showers were put at 50 percent overnight Tuesday, with accumulation of an inch or less.
Northeast Ohio’s snowbelt lived up to its name with snowfall totals from Monday’s storm reported between 14 inches and 20 inches across Geauga County, and 4 inches and 12 inches in Lake County.

Teen hit by snowplow downgraded to fair condition
Wednesday, December 15th, 2010CARLISLE TWP. — A teenager who was hit by a snowplow while he was shoveling his driveway Monday is in slightly worse shape this morning.
MetroHeath Medical Center in Cleveland reports he is now listed in fair condition. He was listed in good condition yesterday morning.
A spokeswoman said she is hopeful he can overcome this “setback.”
According to the State Highway Patrol, Jason White, 18, was hit about 9:45 Monday morning near the intersection of Butternut Ridge and Indian Hollow roads in Carlisle Township.
He was struck by a snowplow owned by a private company, Plas Plowing, the State Highway Patrol said. First responders reported White had facial injuries.
First responders requested a LifeFlight helicopter, but weather prevented the helicopters from flying. A LifeCare ambulance requested and received approval to drive White directly to MetroHealth.
Man shot overnight in Lorain
Tuesday, December 14th, 2010LORAIN — A Lorain man was shot in the foot overnight in Central Lorain, and police have conducted gunshot-residue tests on that man and two other individuals.
Police received a call about 1 a.m. of shots fired and people running in the area of Reid Avenue and West 27th Street.
Police arrived to find an abandoned silver Chevrolet HHR left sideways in the roadway. Neighbors reported that two males had run north through backyards. Within minutes, police received a call from an off-duty police officer reporting that he had detained two males behind a Lexington Avenue home.
Police found the vehicle had the passenger-side window broken out and several gunshot holes in its side.
The pair, two Lorain men, ages 38 and 32, told police they were passengers in the vehicle, which was driven by someone named “J” or “JD.” They said J stopped to speak to individuals driving a black SUV, but four men exited that vehicle with guns and began firing at them. They said they exited the vehicle and fled on foot. They said they didn’t know where J went.
As the pair was being interviewed, another officer stopped a car at West 21st Street near Lorain Drive and discovered a shooting victim, Randy Glover, 19, of Lorain. Officers conducted a followup interview with Glover at Mercy hospital.
He told them he was a passenger in a black Oldsmobile Bravado when the vehicle was cut off by the HHR. He said two males exited that vehicle and he fled because he “knew they were going to start shooting.” He was shot in the foot by one of the men from the HHR, he said, as he attempted to flee.
Glover said he then hopped back from the vehicle and asked his friend to drive him to the hospital. As they fled, he said the driver hit a curb and lost a tire, so the pair abandoned the vehicle and fled. He said he then called his mother for a ride to the hospital.
Officers found four spent 9 mm casings and two spent projectiles in the roadway and two spent projectiles in the HHR.
The Oldsmobile Bravado was located on West 27th Street, and both vehicles were towed from the scene to be inventoried.
A review of on-board camera footage from a police cruiser at the scene revealed an audio conversation between the first two males discussing making up a name for the driver of the car they’d been in, according to the report.
“I’ll say ‘J,’ and you tell them ‘JD’ was driving,” the report quotes them as saying.
Gunshot residue tests were performed on all three men.
Police never located the alleged drivers of either vehicle.
