NOOA Pink Whistle Intiative

nooa-pinkYou may be seeing pink at local high school basketball games this week.

The Northern Ohio Officials Association will be using pink whistles at select games in the area January 23- January 29 to help raise cancer awareness. The NOOA is also collecting funds though the sales of pink whistles and donation. The money earned through the initiative will be donated to cancer research. So far, the campaign has raised over $800 to help fight cancer. The NOOA’s ultimate goal is to raise $2,000 dollars this year.

If you would like to help in the fight, the NOOA asks that you make checks payable to the American Cancer Society and send them to NOOA, PO Box 676, Berea, Ohio 44017.

bay-v-elyriaOn Tuesday night we tip off our week of high school boys basketball coverage when Elyria hosts Bay in a non-conference showdown. At 11-2 the Elyria Pioneers have taken over sole possession of first place in the Greater Cleveland Conference. On Friday night the Pioneers claimed a 75-58 win over Euclid for their sixth victory in a row. The Bay Rockets enter Tuesday night’s affair coming off of a loss to Holy Name on Friday night. The Rockets will look to get back in the win column behind their big forward RJ Sunahara who posted 28 points in their last game. firelands-v-keysonteIt’s a big game in the Patriot Athletic Conference Stars Division Friday night on AM930 and WEOL.com when the Firelands Falcons travel to Keystone. A loss to Wellington on Friday night dropped the Wildcats out of a three way tie for first in the division. At 5-3 in league play the rest of their games have become must wins if they want to get back into the race for the division title. The Firlands Falcons are in a similar situation. After a few hiccups early in the year, Firelands seems poised to work their way back into the division race, however,at 4-4 in league play the Falcons have a large mountain to climb to reach the summit where Wellington and Buckeye now stand tied for first. columbia-v-keystoneThe girls take the court on Saturday afternoon on WEOL in a Patriot Athletic League crossover that features Columbia at Keystone. The rest of the league has yet to figure out the enigma that is the Keystone Lady Wildcats. At the midway point of the season Keystone remains unbeaten in league play. Columbia enters the week 6-3 in league play and is looking to catch up to Lutheran West for first in the Stripes division. Pregame between the Cats and the Raiders begins Saturday at 2pm on AM930 and here on WEOL.com.


Sydney Roule 1,000 Point Ceremony

On Tuesday, January 11 Amherst Senior Sydney Roule posted 24 points against North Olmsted lifting her career total to over 1,000 points. On Saturday before the Lady Comets game with Avon, Roule and her achievement were recognized in front of the home crowd. Our own Tim Alcorn emceed the ceremony. Roule would post another 24 points against the Eagles that day adding to her career total and helping the Comets claim a 55-31 victory. Lorain’s Dave McFarland Named 2016 Cleveland Browns High School Coach of the Year

dave-mcfarlandOn Sunday, Dec. 11 Lorain High School Football coach Dave McFarland was recognized by the Cleveland Browns as the 2016 High School Coach of the Year. As the Browns honoree, McFarland will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the 2017 Pro Bowl in Orlando, courtesy of the NFL and the Browns, and can earn an additional $15,000 in grants for Lorain High School’s football program if named the NFL’s national recipient.

Coach McFarland led the Titans to the Division I State Playoffs for the second time in the past three years this season. The Titans fought their way to the State Quarterfinals before they were eliminated by Olentangy Liberty.
