Tim Alcorn Presenting the 2016 Lorain County Miss Basketball Award to Elyria Catholics Riley Schill

Monday night at North Ridgeville High School a number of Lorain County Girls Basketball players took the court for one last time in the 2016 Lorain County Girls All-Star Games.  Post players drained three point shots, the old fashioned granny shot made an appearance and Elyria Catholic’s Riley Schill took home the 2016 Lorain County Miss Basketball Award as a night of basketball was enjoyed by players and fans alike.

In the opening game the team lead by Coach Nick Dimacchia (Clearview) and Coach Gary Bruner (Vermilion) picked up a 48-36 win over the squad led by Coach Thomas Thompson (Columbia) and Coach Brad Barhorst (Brookside).   Fireland’s Dalaney Rogala led all scorers in the opening game with 14 points.  With 10 points, The leading scorer for Dick Esser Plumbing was Elyria Catholics Julia Scarpelli.

Between the games Mike Walsh of Elyria High School was inducted into the Lorain County Girls Basketball Hall-of-Fame, and WEOL’s Tim Alcorn announced Elyria Catholics Riley Schill as this years Lorain County Miss Basketball. Schill helped lead the Panthers to the Regional Finals this year averaging 12 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists a game. Off the court, Schill also excelled in the class room earning a GPA of 4.5.

In the second game of the night, it was Team Weed Pro, led by Coach Eric Rothgery (Elyria Catholic) and Coach Lisa Medvetz (Lake Ridge), who trumped team Schafer Development, led by Coach Dave Zvara (Avon Lake) and Coach Kevin Collins(Amherst). Brianna Kirk of Lake Ridge led the winning team with a game high 16 points. In the loss, Tahjanae Flowers of Clearview led her side with 13 points.

The Second Harvest Food Bank’s  Harvest for Hunger Campaign has officially kicked off.  They started this years campaign with a leap year Kick-Off party at the Second Harvest Food Bank’s head quarters on Baumhart Road in Lorain. The event was emceed by WEOL’s Craig Adams and also featured a speech from Honorary Chair Tony Gallo. To hear what he had to say click here.

The Harvest for Hunger Campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks covering 21 counties in northeast Ohio. It is one of the largest food and fund drives in the country. This years goal is to raise over 1 million meals with donated funds and food to restock local food pantries and provide hot meals at local kitchens and shelters in the region.
