Water has stopped flowing after main break near Lakeview Park

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

LORAIN — A water main break at West 11th Street and Parkview Avenue in Lorain resulted in “quite a bit of water” in the roadway for several hours, according to Linda O’Connor from the city Water Department.

The West 11th and Parkview intersection is on the southeast side of Lakeview Park.

No roads were shut down completely, and there was no boil alert, O’Connor said a little before 6 a.m. Later calls to the Lorain Water Distribution Department have not yet been returned.

They were trying to isolate the break, O’Connor said, and cones were set up to help people avoid the water.

The water gushed had been gushing since at least 4:30 a.m., according to Lori Riegel-Kapalin, who lives on West 12th just east of Parkview.

“The water is gushing out, and the streets are flooding,” said Riegel-Kapalin, who used Facebook to warn parents of Lakeview School students to use a different way to school.

The water finally stopped gushing at 8:45 a.m., she said, adding that there were red bricks all over the street and the park where the water had been.

BREAKING NEWS: Coroner’s office IDs victim of fatal Lorain fire

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

LORAIN — A fire early this morning at 1758 Broadway claimed the life of a Lorain man, according to Assistant Fire Chief Gary Burls.

The Lorain County coroner’s office identified the victim as 56-year-old Eugene Mahon.

The fire, called in at 4:30 a.m., burned a four-unit cottage owned by the Lorain Metropolitan Housing Authority just south of Kennedy Plaza, Burls said.

Lorain firefighters arrived at the scene in two minutes and found the fire fully involved but were able to rouse the occupants of the cottage’s other units, Burls said. He said he believed there was one person in each unit.

The fire was out by 4:52, and firefighters searching the building found Mahon slumped up against a bathroom door and overcome by smoke, Burls said.

Mahon’s apartment, which was where the fire started, was totally destroyed, and the other three apartments had some smoke damage, Burls said. He estimated the fire caused $40,000 in damage.

A cause has not been determined, but Burls said the Lorain Fire Department’s fire marshal as well as the state fire marshal are investigating.

H1N1 vaccine available this weekend

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

ELYRIA — The Elyria City Health District will have the H1N1 vaccine available for people it considers at risk at its already-scheduled flu shot clinic this weekend.

After receiving a shipment of the vaccine earlier than expected, Health District officials said, “OK, I think we should do this,” Health Commissioner Kathryn Boylan said this morning about offering the vaccine early.

This weekend’s clinic is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Jude Church in Elyria.

Initially, the H1N1 vaccine will be available for pregnant women, anyone who lives with or cares for infants under 6 months old, health care workers and emergency services personnel, children 6 months through 24 years old and anyone ages 25 to 64 with chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems.

As the supply of vaccine increases, the priority groups will include more individuals, Boylan said. Since they will be limiting who can get the vaccine Saturday, Boylan said she doesn’t expect to run out.

The clinic will also have the seasonal flu vaccine available. Both vaccines will be available as a nasal spray and as an injection.

People can get both injections on the same day or can get one live spray and the other as an injection on the same day but cannot get two live sprays at once, Boylan said.

Cost is $15 for the seasonal flu vaccine. The H1N1 vaccine will be available for free initially.

Other clinics are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 5 at Midway Mall and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 8 at Elyria City Hall.
