Shormen edge Comets in WEOL Baseball Diamond Duel

The Avon Lake Shormen handed the Amherst Comets the second loss of the season in a 4-3 final Wednesday night.

Defensively the Shormen were lead on the mound by Ryan Shinko who allowed just three hits while pitching all in all seven inning for the win.

At the plate Ethan Shepard and Kal Kuwalu paced Avon Lake with two hits each.

The win advances the Shormen to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in SWC play. The Comets fall to 7-2 on the year and 4-2 in the SWC.

Avon Lake advances to Quarterfinals of the Scholastic Games of Lorain County Presented by the Elyria Public Library

Avon Lake Team: Natalie Miller, Connor McNeill, Irwin Deng

In the second wild card match up of the Scholastic Games of Lorain County postseason, the Avon Lake team mad up of Natalie Miller, Irwin Deng and Connor McNeill defeated the Amherst team of Devin Harmych, Sam Gargasz and Gabby Krugman by a score of 460-200.

The match was tied after the Current Events Round where Amherst went a perfect 5-for-5 on their questions.

It was the third round, when the buzzers were introduced, that the Avon Lake team earned the advantage doubling the score of Amherst with quick responses. In the proceeding Multi-Clue round, Irwin Deng picked up a crucial 70 points to assure a victory for the Shormen.

Avon Lake’s Connor McNeill picked up the Standout Scholar Award.

Raiders sink the Clippers in WEOL Baseball Diamond Duel Opener

WEOL opened the 2019 High School Baseball season Monday night with a PAC stripes match up between the 4-3 Columbia Raiders and the 2-3 Clearview Clippers.

After posting seven runs in the first inning, the Columbia Raiders cruised to a 13-1 victory over their division rivals.

Carson Heidecker led the Radiers at the plate finishing the night 3-for-4 with a double, home run and five RBIs.

On the mound Nick Milluzzi kept the Clippers bats silents allowing just five hits and striking out six batters.

Grant Named 2019 Lorain County Mr. Basketball

Just before the Lorain County Boys All Star game at Avon Lake, Lorain’s Devon Grant was named the 2019 Lorain County Mr. Basketball Award winner.

During his time at Lorain, Grant wracked up video game type numbers, finishing his career with 1,564 point. He also set new school records with 31 consecutive free throw hit, 44 points in a single game, and 10 three pointers hit in a single game.

Grant will continue his playing career next season at Miami University, an NCAA Division I program.
