AUDIO: Man shot on Eighth Street; Elyria High lockdown over

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

ELYRIA — Elyria police are responding to a shooting on Eighth Street, and Elyria High School was briefly placed on exterior lockdown after initial reports that the shooter had fled.

Listen to scanner audio from the police call:

Police responded to the shooting about 12:15 p.m. at 215 Eighth Street. A man told a police dispatcher a masked gunman wearing all black entered his home, shot him and then fled on foot in an unknown direction.

Shortly afterward Elyria police reported stopping a man that matched that description. It was not immediately clear if it was the same man.

Elyria High was placed on exterior lockdown as a precaution, according to schools spokeswoman Amy Higgins. She said exterior lockdown means school was still in session but no one was coming or going from the building. The lockdown lasted about a half hour and was over by 1:15 p.m.

At the Eighth Street scene, one victim, an adult male, was removed from the home on a stretcher and taken to the hospital by ambulance. His condition was not immediately available.

Source: Former juvenile court judge Strickland pick for running mate

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

COLUMBUS — Gov. Ted Strickland plans to name a former juvenile court judge as his running mate, The Associated Press has learned.

A source with knowledge of the choice tells the AP the Democrat’s running mate is Yvette McGee Brown. She directs a Columbus nonprofit that advocates for children and families. Anonymity was requested because the source was not authorized to make the information public.

McGee Brown, who is black, adds gender and racial diversity to Strickland’s team less than a week after Republican rival John Kasich chose state Auditor Mary Taylor as his lieutenant governor pick. The Dayton Daily News first reported McGee Brown’s selection.

A news conference is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Strickland needs a new candidate for lieutenant governor because incumbent Lee Fisher is running for U.S. Senate.

BREAKING NEWS: At least 3 men dead after plane crash, fourth body may be in wreckage

Monday, January 18th, 2010

At least three men are dead after a plane crash this afternoon at the Lorain County Regional Airport, and rescuers say there’s a possibility there could be a fourth body somewhere in the wreckage, according to Lt. Travis Hughes, commander of the Elyria post of the State Highway Patrol.

According to Hughes, the FAA is en route from Cleveland and has asked the patrol to hold the scene for their arrival.

Listen to scanner audio from the plane crash:

The plane was approaching the airport to land from the west a little after 2 p.m., and there is no word yet what caused it to crash.

According to Flightaware.com, the plane departed from Gainesville Regional Airport in Florida a little after 11 a.m. for a 2 hour and 38 minute flight and was scheduled to arrive at the Lorain County Regional Airport a little after 1:30 p.m.

“All we know is it’s a really horrible crash,” de la Porte said.

Listen to an interview with neighbor Bob Tallhamer, who saw the plane coming in:

He described the plane as a “fairly big” propeller plane.

According to info from the Federal Aviation Administration database, the plane, which was manufactured in 2002, is a Mitsubishi fixed wing multi-engine turbo-prop and is owned by Mitts Corp. from Gainesville.

Also on scene are Tom Kelley of Lorain County Emergency Management, Lorain County Coroner Paul Matus and the Oberlin Fire Department.

What do you want to say to President Obama?

Monday, January 18th, 2010

President Barack Obama’s visit to Lorain County on Friday is billed as the second stop on the “White House to Main Street Tour,” the first being Allentown, Pa., in December.

He’s pledged to meet with workers who have lost their jobs, business owners and workers during the trip to an area that’s been hard hit by the national recession.

Regardless of how many people actually get to bend the president’s ear, we’re pretty sure there will be plenty who won’t have such an opportunity.

So that’s why we are asking you to write and tell us what you’d say to the president given the opportunity. We plan on publishing them prior to his visit, so get moving — we’ll need them in our hands by Wednesday to get them into the paper.
