Jeremiah Smith Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has been named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced this afternoon.

Smith was instrumental in the Buckeyes’ 38-7 win at Michigan State on Saturday night. He caught five passes for 83 yards and scored two total touchdowns – one rushing and one receiving. Smith took a reverse and scored from 19 yards out to put Ohio State ahead 17-7 midway through the second quarter. He then added a pair of highlight-reel worthy one-handed catches later in the quarter, including one for a 17-yard touchdown that gave Ohio State a 24-7 lead at halftime.

For the season, Smith ranks second in the conference in receiving yards per game (91.0), third in touchdown receptions (five) and fifth in receiving yards (364). He has caught at least one touchdown pass in each of Ohio State’s first four games. Smith’s receiving yardage total already is fourth-most among true freshmen wide receivers in school history and his 19 receptions ranks fifth.

The Buckeyes, who remained at No. 3 in this week’s Associated Press poll, host Iowa on Saturday at Ohio Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. in front of a national audience on CBS.
